The South African Senior Women’s National Team (Banyana Banyana) beat a 10 women Senegal 2-0 in the second international friendly played on Tuesday (4 June 2024) in Thies, Senegal.
The visitors opening the scoring with a beautiful free kick by Amogelang Motau in the 13th minute, before clubmate at the University of the Western Cape, Noxolo Cesane, doubled the lead for the Sasol-sponsored team in the 43rd minute.
Head Coach Dr Desiree Ellis made changes after the break, bringing on Linda Motlhalo for Kholosa Biyana, while Sibulele Holweni checked in for Motau. Senegal also made four changes to try and turn the tables on their opponents.
Thubelihle Shamase came on for Cesane in the 62nd minute.
Banyana Banyana continued to dominate the attack and forced the Senegalese to go back to their physical ways, which earned them a red card – Syla Coumba the culprit after a foul on goalkeeper Kaylin Swart in the 67th minute. The latter was unable to continue and her place was taken by Kebotseng Moletsane for her fourth cap.
Captain of the day Lebohang Ramalepe as well as Asanda Hadebe were withdrawn and replaced by Karabo Dhlamini and Lesego Nkoane in the 75th.
“We played to our strengths today after looking at our errors in the first match, and that is how we managed to dominate the entire match.
We are happy with the performance we saw today and will continue to build on it;” said Ellis.
