The Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana were held to a 1-all draw by Senegal in the first of two friendly international matches played at Stade Lar Dior on Saturday (1 June 2024).
The African Champions took the lead through Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies forward Nthabiseng Majiya in the 68thminute but conceded a last minute penalty for a share of the spoils.
Head Coach Dr Desiree Ellis had made six changes to the team that faced Nigeria in Banyana Banyana’s last match in April when they lost in the 2024 Olympic Games qualifiers – Kaylin Swart, Karabo Dhlamini, Linda Motlhalo, Sinoxolo Cesane, Lebogang Ramalepe, Amogelang Motau and Tiisetso Makhubela, all started against the Super Falcons of Nigeria and were in the starting line-up against Senegal.
It was a very physical game in the first half with stoppages throughout the first stanza.
The game only alive after the recess as the visitors were able to string some passes together, this following the introduction of Kholosa Biyana for Sinoxolo Cesane.
Further changes were implemented when Linda Motlhalo was withdrawn for Nonhlanhla Mthandi while a forced substitution came about as the injured Karabo Dhlamini made way for Asanda Hadebe.
It is not clear if Dhlamini will be available for the second match as the medical team are still going to make an assessment on the extent of her injury.
Nicole Michael, Thubelihle Shamase and Lesego Nkoane then checked in for Majiya, Amogelang Motau and Sibulele Holweni respectively.
Banyana Banyana and Senegal meet again on Tuesday (4 June 2024) at the same venue. Kickoff is at 7pm.
