2021 Sasol League National Champs kick off in Durban

The much-anticipated and long-awaited 2021 Sasol League National Championships kicked off today in Durban in fine style.

A total of 19 goals were scored in three match played on Day 1 of competition.

Eastern Cape’s City Lads Ladies were the biggest winners as they thumped Royal Wizards from the Northern Cape 12-3 in the last fixture of the day – with Onelisa Nanaseli and Nwabisa Kolisi registering the first hat-tricks of the tournament. All six goals were scored in the first half.

Kolisi was chosen as the Diski Queen of the Match.

The delayed Champs, which were postponed in December last year due to Covid-19, are underway at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi.

“The Sasol League National Champs is a pinnacle event for Women’s Football in South Africa. We are excited to be at the King Zwelithini Stadium after the event was postponed in December 2021 due to Covid-19. May the best team walk away with this trophy,” said Sasol’s Dean Somerset from Durban.

Also in attendance at the games was the head coach of the South African U-17 Women’s National Team and former Banyana Banyana captain, Simphiwe Dludlu.

She was in the company of Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies coach Jerry Tshabalala, as well as University of Johannesburg’s coaching staff Anna Monate and Blaque Dunga.

Two other games were played earlier in the day.

Limpopo’s Copperbelt Ladies played to a one-all draw against Ixias FC from the Free State.

Copperbelt’s Koketso Koko, who scored the opening goal of the tournament, walked away with the Diski Queen of the Match award.

The second game saw Mpumalanga’s TS Galaxy surrender a 1-0 lead and allow Tswelelang De’Scorpion of North West back into the contest with an equaliser two minutes from time.

De’Scorpion’s Dineo Montwedi was named the Diski Queen of the Match.

Action continues on Wednesday (9 February 2022) when De’Scorpion takes on Gauteng’s Croesus Ladies, Royal Ladies up against Vasco Da Gama from the Western Cape and Copperbelt facing hosts Lindelani Ladies.
