WOMENS’S FOOTBALL – SEOPOSENWE IN THE PLAY-OFFS FINAL IN MEXICO, KGATLANA LOSES OUT

Jermaine Seoposenwe’s Rayadas del Monterrey will contest the final of the Clausura 2024 Play-offs to determine the league champions in the Liga MX Femenil in Mexico, but there was no such luck for Thembi Kgatlana’s UANL Tigres who were knocked out in the semi-finals on Tuesday morning (21 May 2024).

Monterrey defeated Pachuca 4-2 in the second leg, winning 6-2 on aggregate following a 2-0 victory in the first leg encounter.

After trailing 3-1 from the first leg, Tigres managed a 1-0 victory against Club America in the second leg, but it was not enough as they went down 3-2 on aggregate. Kgatlana was a no-show after picking up an injury and missed the match.

The Rayadas will face Club America in the final, with the first leg scheduled for Friday (24 May 2024) while the second will take place on Monday (27 May 2024).

This will be the first time that Seoposenwe features in the play-offs final after playing for FC Juarez last season where they were knocked out in the quarterfinals.

Monterrey are in their sixth final and will be hoping for better fortunes after lifting the trophy twice.

The last time they contested the title was three years ago in the Apertura 2021, defeating their biggest rival, Tigres to claim their second championship.

Seoposenwe has been the most outstanding South African in the Mexican women’s league this season. She has scored eight goals in the regular season and added one more in the play-offs. The Capetonian now stands a good chance of picking up her first gold medal since arriving in that country in 2022.

By progressing to the final, Rayadas have also qualified for the inaugural CONCACAF Women’s Champions Cup – the first official competition for women’s club in the region, which will be used in future to qualify for the FIFA Women’s Club World Cup, set to launch in 2026.

Both Kgatlana and Seoposenwe have been left out of the Banyana Banyana squad to face Senegal in two friendly international matches later this month (31 May) and early in June.
