WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: CentreCircle.online looks back at some of the stories that made headlines in 2023

South African women’s football had some incredible moments in 2023 and as the dawn of the new year affords more opportunities for all the role-players to stake their claim in this fastest growing sport around the world.

The year 2023 saw the Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana break record after record – getting their first win at a FIFA Women’s World Cup, and followed that up with qualifying for the Round of 16 in Australia and New Zealand – the only South African national team – male or female – to ever achieve that feat in a FIFA World Cup.

Still on matters on the field, the University of Fort Hare were promoted to the Hollywoodbets Super League – in their first attempt – alongside Lindelani Ladies of KwaZulu Natal.

Fort Hare became the fifth institute of learning in the elite women’s football in South Africa, following in the footsteps of University of WC, University of Johannesburg, University of Pretoria and the Tshwane University of Technology.

Off the field, Head Coach of Banyana Banyana Desiree Ellis further rewrote the history books when she was named the 2023 CAF Women’s Coach of the Year – the fourth time in a row she claimed the trophy, and the only coach to win it four times.

To add to her accolades, President Cyril Ramaphosa bestowed Ellis with the Order of Ikhamanga for her contribution in sport, while she also received the Cape Town City Civic Honour from the Mayor of the City, Geordin Hill-Lewis.

Also at the CAF Awards, five South Africans made the list of Africa’s Best XI – Goalkeeper Andile Dlamini, midfielders Linda Motlhalo and Refiloe Jane, as well as defenders Bambanani Mbane and Lebohang Ramalepe, while Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies walked away with the Best African Women’s Club of the Year.

The Brazilians won a treble in 2023 – repeating the same achievement of the year 2021. They won the COSAFA CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers; the CAF Women’s Champions League as well as the domestic title, the Hollywoodbets Super League, winning the latter four times in a row.

There were also several winners in other awards.

gsport named Banyana Banyana, Janine van Wyk and Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies as some of the Newsmakers of 2023.

Van Wyk holds the record for the most national team appearances on the African continent after reaching 185 caps, breaking an 11-year old record previously held by Ahmed Hassan of Egypt.

The former Banyana Banyana captain has hung up her boots and will now concentrate on coaching.

Over and above that, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies goal minder, Andile Dlamini, walked away with the Athlete of the Year accolade at the 2023 Momentum gsport Awards, adding to her highly-publicised Goalkeeper of the Year award at the CAF Champions League.

At the gsport awards, Ellis won the Coach of the Year, Banyana Banyana lifted the Team of the Year trophy while Sasol won the Nielsen Sports South Africa Sponsor of the Year.

Banyana Banyana were also recipients of the Ministerial Recognition of Excellence award at the same event.

Also, the South African Football Association (SAFA) appointed former Banyana Banyana player Lydia Monyepao as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) – the first ever woman to permanently occupy that seat.

She took over from former CEO Tebogo Motlanthe.

A lot is in store again for women’s football, but while waiting for what’s to come in 2024, let’s cast our minds back to 2023 and revisit some of the stories that made headlines.

“I am very overwhelmed, I will be honest with you, this feels like getting a knighthood. I am very grateful. I am very blessed to be able to receive it and I am even more blessed that for the first time at any event my mother has been able to come with me. So, this is very special,” said Ellis.

“I work in a team sport, I don’t work alone so it’s a big thank you to the Banyana Banyana players, the staff and everyone else involved in women’s football, SAFA, Sasol, coaches who have come before us, coaches in the league and most of all people that have been with me on my journey – a big thank you to them.”

FIFA threatens Women’s World Cup blackout in five big European countries

3 May

FIFA threatened the five big European countries – England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France – of a broadcast blackout of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

This was after FIFA President Gianni Infantino said offers from some broadcasters were “still very disappointing and a slap in the face” for women’s football.

Speaking in Geneva, Switzerland, Infantino called on broadcasters to pay a fair prize for the women’s game, like they were doing for men’s football.

“The offers from broadcasters, mainly in the ‘Big 5’ European countries, are still very disappointing and simply not acceptable based on four criteria. Firstly, 100% of any rights fees paid would go straight into women’s football, in our move to promote actions towards equal conditions and pay. Secondly, public broadcasters in particular have a duty to promote and invest in women’s sport,” said Infantino.

“Thirdly, the viewing figures of the FIFA Women’s World Cup are 50-60% of the men’s FIFA World Cup (which in turn are the highest of any event), yet the broadcasters’ offers in the ‘Big 5’ European countries for the FIFA Women’s World Cup are 20 to 100 times lower than for the men’s FIFA World Cup. Finally, and concretely, whereas broadcasters pay USD 100-200 million for the men’s FIFA World Cup, they offer only USD 1-10 million for the FIFA Women’s World Cup. This is a slap in the face of all the great FIFA Women’s World Cup players and indeed of all women worldwide.”

Nadine Kessler, UEFA managing director of women’s football:

“This is the first time we have fully sold out a Women’s Champions League final. And that’s a few weeks in advance, which is just another sign that we have reached a new level.
