Wael El-Sayed explains Wadi Degla’s heavy loss to Sundowns Ladies

Wadi Degla head coach Wael El-Sayed has explained his side’s poor outing after a 5-0 disappointing defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns at Grand Stade de Marrakech on Thursday.

A brace from Boitumelo Rabale and a goal each from Lelona Daweti, Melinda Kagdiete and Bambanani Mbane condemned the Egyptians to a back-to-back defeat in the tournament.

Degla narrowly missed out on the knockout stages in 2021 but this time, they failed to match their past record and the manager is focused on picking positives from their uninspiring outing.

“We played against a great team, which plays beautiful football and is well organised, without forgetting that the majority of its players are part of the team that won the last Women’s Africa Cup of Nations,” El-Sayed said during the press conference.

“We tried to play well and face them. Our players have seen what professionalism is all about with this tournament. For us, playing in this competition helps us to improve.

“There is a gap and experience. We’ve only just started and this is just the beginning for us. Congratulations to Sundowns and we still have the last match to go.

“We have young players, generation 2007, 2005 and 2004. This opposition is interesting to know exactly where we are.”

Despite successive opening defeats, the North Africans will be hoping to end their poor campaign on a high when they take on Bayelsa Queens at Stade Moulay Hassan in Rabat on November 6.
