Vasco Da Gama clinch women’s football elite league status

Western Cape’s Vasco Da Gama will play in the Hollywoodbets Super League in the upcoming season.

In the elite league of women’s football, they join Eastern Cape’s City Lads Ladies, who clinched their spot with a 3-2 win over Lindelani Ladies of KwaZulu Natal.

Vasco had to sweat it out in a penalty shootout to defeat Gauteng’s Croesus Ladies 4-3 after they finished 1-all in regulation time in the second semi-final of the 2021 Sasol League National champs at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi.

Miche Minnies had put the Coastal side in the lead in the 12th minute before Lerato Makhanya levelled matters in the 25th minute.

When both sides could not be separated, the winner had to be decided on penalties.

Croesus had the misfortune of their first kick saved by Jessica Williams, while Lisbeth Tshabalala also failed to convert, but Makhanya, Mokgadi Seanego and goalkeeper Thoko Mndaweni were successful.

For Vasco,  Williams and Chantey Norris could not score, but the trio of Abigail Petersen, Shannon Mills and Lindsay Dolmen all hit the back of the net.

In the sudden death, Florence Ranyawa missed for Croesus and Noluthando Bottoman confirmed Vasco’s Hollywoodbets Super League status when she scored her spot kick.

Geneve Jaftha of Vasco was named the Diski Queen of the Match.

The Capetonians will now face City Lads Ladies in the final on Sunday, 13 February 2022.
