Uganda and Ethiopia draw in U17 Women’s WC qualifier

FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers 2022
First Round, First Leg
Uganda 2-2 Ethiopia

Hosts Uganda threw away a two goal lead to share the spoils in a 2-all draw with Ethiopia in the first leg of the second round in a FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifier.

The clash took place at St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende on Friday, 4 March 2022.

With nothing separating the two teams at the break, Uganda upped the tempo in the second half. They were rewarded with a goal in the 66th minute when striker Hadijah Nandago gave the hosts the lead with a well-taken shot.

Six minutes later she was on the scoresheet again following a defensive error to hand Uganda an almost comfortable lead.

But the visitors staged a dramatic fightback and piled on the pressure in search of elusive goals.

It eventually paid off 11 minutes from time when Emush Daniel Dandamo reduced the deficit with a long taken shot that gave Uganda’s goalkeeper Sharon Kaidu no chance.

With a lot of belief and motivation behind them, Ethiopia continued to launch more attacks.

When it seemed it would end with Uganda victorious, substitute Semira Kedir Ahmed had other ideas and deep into stoppage time she scored the all-important equaliser to make it 2-2.

Ethiopia head to the second leg in two weeks’ time with a massive advantage.

The two sides will square off again on Sunday, 20 March 2022 at the Abebe Bekila Stadium in the capital Addis Ababa.

The aggregate winner will face South Africa’s Bantwana in the third round on a date still to be determined.
