Sundowns Ladies go top after midweek win, action continues in the Hollywoodbets Super League

Reigning Hollywoodbets Super League champions, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, have shot to the top of the table after coming from behind to defeat Ma-Indies 3-1 in a in a midweek clash at the Groenkloof Tuks Stadium.

The two teams were playing their second matches of the season.

The visiting Ma-Indies took the lead before Miche Minnies levelled matters for the home side as the two sides went down the tunnel in a 1-1 stalemate at the break.

Lelona Daweti and Melinda Kgadiete celebrated their Banyana Banyana call-up for the Turkish Women’s Cup squad with second half goals to hand the Brazilians all three points, in a match that saw new recruit Thato Letsoso (from the Tshwane University of Technology) make her debut.

“We had a shaky start to the game because our opponents were quite formidable and grabbed the opening goal. Despite that early setback, we didn’t panic and responded well by equalizing before the break. We improved after the restart and I’m very excited to have contributed to the team’s success in my first game for this great club. We’re already looking forward to the next game,” Letsoso told her club’s website.

The win ensured Banyana Ba Style maintain their perfect run of two wins in as many matches in 2023 – this comes after their hard-fought 1-0 victory over a stubborn Richmond United in the opening fixture of the season.

Ma-Indies have been part of the women’s league since 2021, and have never beaten Sundowns Ladies – suffering 2-1 and 6-0 defeats that year, lost 3-0 and 7-0 last season and the trend continues with the latest loss.

The Limpopo side is now second from the bottom as they also lost to Royal AM over on Saturday (4 February 2023), while Coal City Wizards is at the foot of the table following their heavy defeat to UWC (9-1).

Action continues this coming weekend with only five matches scheduled.

Looking for their first three points of the season (after sharing the spoils with First Touch FC), TUT will be hosting newcomers Copperbelt Ladies who made a perfect start with a 2-1 win over fellow debutants Tuks Ladies.

TUT and Copperbelt meet on Saturday, 11 February at TUT Pretoria Stadium starting at 15h00.

Durban Ladies will be hoping for a positive result and move from the 14th spot on the table when they face Thunderbirds Ladies on the same day in East London (Sisa Dukashe Stadium). The KwaZulu Natal outfit lost their opening match while the Eastern Cape side played to a draw.

On Sunday (12 February) action moves to the University of Johannesburg Stadium in Soweto with two matches set to take place.

It will be a battle of newcomers when Tuks Ladies go toe to toe with TS Galaxy Queens in the early fixture (11h30) – both suffered losses in their first games and will want to see some movement on the points column.

In the afternoon clash (15h00) at the same venue, UJ Ladies will host Coal City Wizards who suffered the biggest defeat of the season when they were thrashed by UWC on Saturday (4 February).

The last match of the weekend will see First Touch FC travelling to Royal AM for a 15h00 date at the Chatsworth Stadium.

Not playing this weekend are Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, UWC, JVW, City Lads Ladies, Richmond United and Ma-Indies.
