  • Relegated Ma-Indies Ladies and Coal City Wizards have bid farewell to the elite women’s league
  • In the 8 matches played this weekend, there were 7 winners and 1 drawn game (TS Galaxy Queens vs Copperbelt Ladies

  • 3 teams failed to score (First Touch, Ma-Indies, Thunderbirds
  • Sundowns Ladies biggest winners (7-0 vs Thunderbirds)
  • A total of 30 goals scored
  • Last day of the league season is Saturday, 9 December

Reigning Hollywoodbets Super League champions, Mamelodi Sundowns are just three points away from retaining their title.

On Sunday, 26 November 2023 the Brazilians demolished Eastern Cape’s Thunderbirds Ladies 7-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium to edge ever so close to adding the domestic championship to their COSAFA trophy and the CAF Women’s Champions League gold – in what would be a repeat of their 2021 exploits.

Sundowns Ladies 7 – 0 Thunderbirds United

Banyana Ba Style were merciless against Thunderbirds Ladies as they march to their fourth league title in succession – with Andisiwe Mgcoyi grabbing a double brace, Miche Minnies scoring two goals and Lerato Kgasago chipping in with one. The East London team ends the season 14th with 20 points – just three behind relegated Coal City Wizards.

Jerry Tshabalala’s charges are now on 72 points with three games remaining.

They are just three points behind current log leaders, the University of the Western Cape (UWC), who completed the season in fine style with a 3-1 win over Durban Ladies at the UWC Stadium in Cape Town.

UWC 3 – 1 Durban Ladies

The students head into the FIFA International break on 75 points, but with full knowledge that the end is nigh, and Sundowns Ladies could conclude the league title race on Tuesday, 5 December.

This is when they take on the University of Johannesburg (UJ Ladies) at the Lucas Moripe Stadium, and a win will secure the title as both the Brazilians and UWC will be on 75 points, but the former have a superior goal difference. The Capetonians are the only side to sail through the league without a draw in 30 games.

UJ Ladies 1 – 2 JVW

The battle for third spot is still raging on between JVW and TS Galaxy Queens.

In their final match of the season, the Blue Diamonds reclaimed the position with a 2-1 victory over UJ Ladies in Soweto – taking them to 63 points, two ahead of the Mpumalanga outfit.

The win was also a fitting farewell to the JVW founder, Janine van Wyk who has hung her boots and will move into coaching – she holds UEFA B coaching Licence.

The game also saw Julia Molin, JVW’s new international signing, score her first goal for the club.

Van Wyk will conclude her illustrious playing career when she when she dons the national team jersey in the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Burkina Faso on Monday, 4 December 2023 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium – in that match the defender will be making her 185th Banyana Banyana match, breaking the 11-year old record of most international appearances of 184 held by Ahmed Hassan of Egypt.

She made her Banyana Banyana debut in 2005.

TS Galaxy Queens 1 – 1 Copperbelt Ladies

TS Galaxy Queens dropped to fourth spot following their 1-all draw against Copperbelt Ladies at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium in Mpumalanga. Sizwe Sibiya’s charges are now on 61 points, two behind JVW, but the Rockets have a game in hand. In their last match of the season, TS Galaxy Queens will lock horns with Sundowns Ladies on Saturday, 9 December in what will bring down the curtain on the 2023 Hollywoodbets Super League season. The corresponding fixture saw the two sides share the spoils after a 1-1 draw.

A win for the Mpumalanga outfit this time around, will help them secure third spot in only their first year campaigning in South Africa’s elite level of Women’s Football, but a draw or a loss will help JVW finish on the highest position since promotion in 2019 (they only started playing in top flight football in 2021 after the 2020 season was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic). In the last two years, the Blue Diamonds ended fourth on both occasions.

Royal AM 3 – 1 Richmond United

Royal AM moved to position five on the table after 3-1 win over Richmond United in both teams’ final match of the season.

The KwaZulu Natal side has not secured the spot, with the University of Pretoria breathing down their necks.

Royal AM is on 55 points, three ahead of Tuks Ladies who have a game in hand.

Richmond United will end the season in seventh place – like they did in 2022, which was a huge improvement from the 11th spot two years ago.

Univ. of Pretoria 1 – 0 First Touch Ladies

Tuks Ladies, in their first season in the Hollywoodbets Super League, put pressure on Royal AM  with a 1-0 victory against First Touch Ladies.

But the students face a tough season-finale when they come up against neighbours, Sundowns Ladies in the Tshwane Derby on Thursday, 7 December.

In the reverse fixture, the Brazilians won 1-0.

Coal City Wizards 4 – 2 City Lads Ladies

At the Puma Stadium in Mpumalanga, relegated Coal City Wizards wrapped up their stay in the elite league with an impressive 4-2 triumph over City Lads Ladies, who finish 13th.

This was their fifth win in 30 matches, with two draws and 23 defeats.

TUT 4-0 Ma-Indies Ladies

But there was no such luck for Ma-Indies Ladies who bid farewell to the Hollywoodbets Super League with their 26thdefeat in 2023 as they were walloped 4-0 by the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in Pretoria.

The Limpopo side, who suffered relegation with three games to go – have not won a match since 22 April when they beat City Lads 3-0.

In 20 fixtures since then, they managed only two draws, losing 18.
