Mamelod Sundowns Ladies head coach Jerry Tshabalala has emphasized the key lessons learned from his side’s opening match at the 2024 Kansas Women’s Cup. The reigning Hollywoodbets Super League champions are the first team from Africa to play in the annual tournament and showed signs of promise despite losing the game 3-0, with all goals coming in the first half.

“We improved in the second half and showed great determination. It was one of those games that reminds us learning never happens in your comfort zone, but rather when you step out of it. Coming here, we knew we were going to be up against tenacious opponents. Their performance was on another level—they pressed us very high. Nevertheless, we fought bravely in the second half and held our ground. It is a learning experience and we will build on this going forward,” said Tshabalala.
The Banyana Ba Style coach further added that the tactical lessons gained so far are valuable:

“For us, this game taught us a lot, particularly about their tactics. It is refreshing to play against a top team with a distinct playing style and to witness it firsthand is incredibly significant for our growth. We may have lost the match, but the lessons we have gained are far more significant.”
Karabo Makhurubetshi reinforced Coach Jerry’s message, saying:

“This trip has been a significant learning experience. We are not done yet; we still have another game ahead against a team with a unique skill set. Every match in this tournament is a chance for us to prove ourselves on an international stage and we are committed to giving it our all.”
Having won five South African championships and two continental titles, Makhurubetshi highlighted the value of international competition:

“The exposure has been great for us to gauge ourselves against top-level teams, as that will enable us to know where we stand and identify areas for improvement. Playing against such high-caliber opponents helps us refine our skills and strategies. We are excited for the challenge and determined to use this experience to grow and excel in our next game.”
Up next for Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies is a clash against the Japanese outfit INAC Kobe, who lost to Atlético Madrid. The Spaniards prevailed 3-0 on penalties after drawing 1-1 against the Asian side in regulation time.
