BANYANA BANYANA’S CESANE, MAGAIA ON TARGET, WHILE MOTAU AND MOTLHALO MAKE DEBUTS

The South African duo of Hilda Magaia and Sinoxolo Cesane was in the spotlight in the Liga MX Femenil as they helped themselves to a brace each for their respective clubs.

This will be sweet music to the ears of Desiree Ellis, head coach of the Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana, more so in the year of the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) where South Africa are the defending champions.

Hilda Magaia

Magaia scored two quickfire goals, eight minutes apart (81’ 89’), but it was not enough to save Club Tijuana to a 2-3 defeat against Club Leon on Monday (3 March) on match Day 10.

The defeat left them in eighth place but still within the play-offs zone for the league title.

Amogelang Motau

Former University of the Western Cape (UWC) midfielder, Amogelang Motau, made her long-awaited debut for Club Tijuana in the second half (59’). She joined the side in January this year after helping the Capetonians to a second-place finish in the 2024 Hollywoodbets Super League season.

Sinoxolo Cesane

Elsewhere, it was a Cesane show as she led the struggling Mazatlán FC to a convincing 3-0 victory over Club Puebla, registering their second win in a row following eight successive losses since the start of the Clausura 2025 in January.

The Capetonian’s brace came in the 57th and 84th minutes, with the win leaving them 15th on the table.

Thembi Kgatlana of UANL Tigres is currently the leading goal scorer among the South African contingent in Mexico with five goals to her name, followed closely by Magaia and Jermaine Seoposenwe on four each, while Cesane has three strikes.

Thembi Kgatlana

Kgatlana hasn’t missed any of the 10 games since the start of the 2025 campaign and has started in all of them.

Magaia has also been busy, playing in nine fixtures and failing to come off the bench in encounter.

Cesane has nine appearances to her name, playing 90 minutes in six of them. But she was not available in one match due to a red card offence.

Jermaine Seoposenwe

Seoposenwe has featured in eight games but missed out on the last two due to injury – including the Classico Regio Femenil against Tigres where they lost 5-1.

Tigres, who have managed four wins in a row, are currently fourth on the table on 20 points, eight behind log leaders Pachuca, while Monterey are fifth on 19 points.

Seoposenwe’s side will be up against the log leaders Pachuca on Friday, and Mazatlán tackles UNAM Pumas on Saturday on the same day Tigres faces Necaxa.

Club Tijuana locks horns with Club Puebla on Sunday.

Linda Motlhalo

In Scotland, Banyana Banyana midfield maestro Linda Motlhalo returned to action where she was a second half substitute for Glasgow City winning 4-0 against Motherwell. The victory saw them return to the summit of the table level on 54 points with second-placed Hibernian. Glasgow City sit at the top due to a superior goal difference

The South African made her second debut in the Scottish Premier Women’s League following a frustrating season in the USA where she was barely used by Racing Louisville. Motlhalo won the league title with the European side before her departure to the USA.

Glasgow City will next face Hearts in a Scottish Cup quarterfinal on Sunday.
