Banyana Banyana forward Noxolo Cesane has secured what is believed to be a lucrative contract in Saudi Arabia.
The University of the Western Cape (UWC) bade farewell to their star player, who jetted out of the country on Tuesday night to start a new life at an unnamed club in the Middle East.
Cesane, who played her last match for the Capetonians in their goalless draw against the University of Pretoria 10 days ago, is set to become the first South African player to play in the Saudi Women’s Pro League.
“It all happened so quickly, perhaps the whole thing took about two weeks – that’s how serious her new club was about landing her signature,” revealed UWC head coach Thinasonke Mbuli.
“She got herself a good deal, and we could not stand in her way. I am very proud of her, more so because she delivered a lot for this team, and we can only wish her well in Saudi Arabia. If you recall she was one of those who played a key role in us booking our spot in the upcoming CAF Women’s Champions League – our first ever. She served us well during the time she spent with us. Everything of the best to her.”
This will be the Gugulethu-born player’s third professional contract abroad, having previously turned out for French Division One outfit Stade de Reims and UANL Tigres in Mexico.
It is believed another player Banyana Banyana regular who has starred for UWC this season, Bongeka Gamede, is also on the verge of a European move in the coming days.
Noxolo, whose twin sister Sinoxolo is currently on the books of Mazatlán FC Femenin in Mexico, leaves the Blues in second position on the league table, and battling for top honours against reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies.
