Banyana Banyana drawn against Nigeria in Group C of AWCON

Banyana have been drawn in Group C of the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2022 alongside rivals and defending champions Nigeria, as well as debutants Botswana and Burundi.

The 14th edition of Africa’s biggest women’s tournament is scheduled to be played from 2-23 July – with the top four countries earning the right to represent the African continent at the 32-team FIFA Women’s World Cup to be held in Australia and New Zealand next year.

Hosts Morocco will battle it out in Group A with Burkina Faso, Senegal and Uganda.

In Group A, South Africa’s neighbours Zambia will face Cameroon, Tunisia and Togo.

The Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana will open 2022 account with a clash against Nigeria on the 4th of July.

The two nations also crossed paths twice at the 2018 edition of the tournament – with one win apiece.

South Africa defeated Nigeria 1-0 in the group stages and they would meet again in the final with the Super Falcons prevailing on penalties in Ghana to lift their ninth title.

The last meeting between the two countries was at the Aish Buhari Cup where Desiree Ellis’ charges were came out tops in a 4-2 win.

The Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana’s second match will be against Burundi on the 7th of July and they will round off the group stages on the 10th with a clash against Botswana who denied them the chance to play at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

The 2022 AWCON kicks off with the hosts taking on Burkina Faso on the 2nd of July at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat.

The quarterfinals are set for the 13th and 14th of July, with the final semi-finals pencilled in for  the 18th .

There will also be a third and fourth play off a day for the final – on the 22nd of July.

South Africa is among the top-ranked nations at the tournament, lying in third place on the continent and 57 in the world, behind Nigeria (1 & 39) and Cameroon (2 & 52).

Completing the top five are Tunisia (6th and 72th) as well as hosts Morocco who are eighth and 77th .
