Another exciting weekend of fixtures in the Hollywoodbets Super League – Week 5

Fireworks are expected when second-placed University of the Western Cape (UWC) host Richmond United in Cape Town.

Both teams have been lethal in front of goals.

After three games each, the students are top of the scoring charts with 16 goals, and Richmond not far off with 10, level with log leaders Sundowns Ladies who achieved their goal tally in four matches.

This clash is one of five fixtures taking place on Saturday – all kicking off at 15h00.

UWC are one of four outfits yet to lose this season – the others being the Brazilians, Royal AM and JVW.

The Puma Stadium will host the battle of the strugglers when bottom-of-the-table Ma-Indies travel to Witbank for a date with 15th placed Coal City Wizards.

The visitors have lost all four of their matches this season, and will be hoping for a turn-around of fortunes, while the home team will be eager to add to the one point they have collected thus far.

Limpopo’s First Touch will be on the road to KwaZulu Natal to face Durban Ladies at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Clermont.

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) will be up against City Lads at the Isaac Wolfson Stadium in Gqeberha.

Following the departure of their coach Lucky Sibiya, and some of their experienced players, the Tshwane side has looked a shadow of their former self, and will need to regroup quickly. They finished third last season – but their start in 2023 has been nothing but unimpressive by their standards – winning one game, drawing two and losing the other.

Known to be always among the top four, they are currently 9th on the table.

JVW will tackle new kids on the block Copperbelt Ladies.

This will be third Limpopo side they will be playing in a row – they hosted and beat both Ma-Indies and First Touch by the same 1-0 margin and will be hoping the winning trend continues at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

After losing to Sundowns Ladies last weekend, head coach Copperbelt Ladies is anticipating another tough day at the office.

“Another tough match against another good side, as you have seen on the log standings – the season has been tough for us, but we are slowly getting it right and we will take each game as it comes. JVW is coming to us, and we will make sure we get the results that we want,” said Selate.

The Solomon Mahlangu Stadium is the place to be this weekend if you are around Mpumalanga.

This is when Hollywoodbets Super League defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies go toe to toe with newcomers TS Galaxy Queens on Sunday at 15h00.

This will be the first ever meeting between the two star-studded sides.

The Brazilians have a perfect start to the league, winning all their four matches while TS Galaxy have won two, drawn one and lost the other.

Two more matches will take place on Sunday.

Another clash that has the potential to ignite is the match-up between newcomers Tuks Ladies and Royal AM which will be part of a double header at the University of Pretoria Stadium at 15h00.

The Tshwane side laboured to a 3-2 win over neighbours TUT, their first league win, but coach Maud Khumalo says Royal AM will be a different proposition.

“I said to my players, this game is done and dusted and it’s going to be a different ball game against Royal AM who are motivated and will have that mentality these are the new kids on the block. This win (against TUT) will surely motivate us when we face Royal AM, and it’s our home game which is also going to be an advantage for us. But I told the girls they mustn’t be complacent, they must just remain humble,” said Khumalo.

The earlier match (11h30) at the same venue will see the University of Johannesburg (UJ Ladies) welcome Thunderbirds Ladies, who got a 5-0 drubbing in their previous clash.

UJ Ladies come into this match in high spirits after going on a goal-scoring spree, where they beat City Lads Ladies 6-0 last weekend.

Both games at the University of Pretoria will be live on SABC TV.
