Wins for UWC, UJ, NWU while Tshwane Derby ends in a stalemate on Day 2 of Varsity Women’s Football

Day 2!

Captain of the University of the Western Cape (UWC) Tiffany Kortjie led from the front as she bagged a hattrick against newcomers University of Venda (Univen) in a one-sided Varsity Women’s Football clash on Saturday (6 September 2025).

The defending champions fired 10 goals without any reply from the Limpopo side who spent almost the entire match picking the ball out of the net.

The result was never in doubt for the Capetonians who shot to a 4-0 lead within 10 min of the start.

Further goals by Chelsea Daniels (2), Akholiwe Matsotsi (2) Faith Maswanganyi, Thembelihle Zulu, as well as Mmabatho Mogale ensured UWC got their second win in as many matches, taking command of Group A with six points.

Univen tried to limit the damage by replacing goalkeeper Matete Makena after seven goals, but the avalanche continued with Nyeleti Mathebula conceding three more before the referee blew the whistle for full time to take the Limpopo team out of their misery.

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and their neighbours, the University of Pretoria-Tuks could not be separated in an exciting Tshwane Derby as they played to a 1-all draw.

It was TUT who seized the advantage five minutes into the encounter through Mokgaetji Ramanna, but it didn’t last long as Lindiwe Nkambule deflected the ball into her own net to level matters just two minutes later.

TUT suffered a major setback when they lost their goalkeeper Retshepaone Ntwayagae to injury and she was replaced by Rebona Tshoma.

The clash was further delayed due to fears of lightning, but when it resumed the spoils were shared, leaving Tuks on four points, two behind log leaders UWC, while TUT has only one point. With one match remaining, Univen has been knocked out after failing to collect any points.

North West University (NWU) bounced back from their first day defeat to UJ (4-0) when they were triumphant in a 2-1 win over a resilient Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).

Nontobeko Gumede of NWU was first on the scoresheet in the 23rd minute, but CPUT equalised shortly before the break through Mosetsanagape Leepile from a long range shot that gave substitute goalkeeper, Cassidy Primo no chance. The latter had just taken the place of the injured goalminder Nonhle Ngema.

But the North West side had the last laugh as they found the winner in the 54th minute. The result has given renewed hope to NWU, who now have three points with one round robin match remaining. CPUT is out of the running to progress after suffering back to back defeats.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) made it two wins in as many matches and also claimed the bragging rights in the last fixture of the day when they defeated Wits 2-0 in a difficult Johannesburg Derby.

Wits was solid in defence marshalled by brilliant goalkeeper Bridgette Mokwena, while UJ were patient in their build-up in search of a goal. The Orange Army got a penalty but Gugulethu Dlamini could not convert. UJ threw everything at Wits bar the kitchen sink and by the break the scoreboard had not changed.

Dlamini redeemed herself when she broke the deadlock just 16 minutes into the second stanza to give UJ the lead. Former Wits player, Thato Mofolo made 2-0 in the 64th minute to give her new team the maximum points.
