Sundowns Ladies leaving no stone unturned in preparation for new season

Never ones to be satisfied about anything, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies have been hard at work during pre-season training as they prepare for the 2022 Hollywoodbets Super League season. The Tshwane side has been playing a few matches to ready themselves for what is expected to be another gruelling season. Masandawana faced off against the Namibian Women’s National Team and took part in a the Dlala Ntombazana Soccer Tournament held in Bloemfontein – where four provinces were represented, Gauteng (Sundowns Ladies), Eastern (Thunderbirds) and Northern Cape (Richmond Ladies), as well as Limpopo (First Touch Academy). Banyana ba Style won their first match 3-0 against First Touch Academy, with goals from Melinda Kgadiete, Andisiwe Mgcoyi and Lerato Kgasago. In the final they came unstuck and lost to 2-1 to Richmond Ladies in the pre-season tournament at the Mangaung Outdoor Centre in Rocklands. Midfielder Thalia Smidt was chosen as the Player of the tournament. “At the end of the day, it is a pre-season tournament. We play, we learn, we go back to the drawing board, and we improve. This is not a time for us to drop our heads. We came into the tournament to learn and do better as a team and assess where we are. And we now know where to fix ahead of the new season,” said Smidt. Head coach Jerry Tshabalala was happy with the overall work put in by his charges. “The pre-season schedule has been great for us as we have had the opportunities to build our fitness levels across the squad. The games offered us some stern tests which helped us to fine-tune our tactical and technical strategies. We have had to play with stronger oppositions (including a couple of Under-20 male teams) to enable us to build our resilience and determination as we embark on the new campaign. Overall, we are happy with the intensity of the preseason games and we are hoping to emulate our record-breaking feats from last term,” said Tshabalala in a statement from the club. He added that they are well aware of what awaits them in the new season, hence a rigorous pre-season training was vital so they can cover all the bases. “We made such a good impression last season both domestically and continentally. We know the challenge that we are up against next season. We are going to be facing teams that are determined to nullify our threats and impede our outlined objectives. That is why I am happy that our preseason program has been designed to test our doggedness and thus far we have been able to test ourselves on multiple fronts. This will enable us to be adequately prepared to defend our titles across all fronts next season,” concluded Tshabalala. The 2022 Hollywoodbets Super League season is scheduled to kick off early next month. By Matlhomola Morake
