SAFA President to sell SA’s FIFA Women’s World Cup bid in New Zealand

President of the South African Football Association (SAFA), Dr Danny Jordaan, is on a mission to sell this country’s bid to host the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Dr Jordaan, alongside Dr Irvin Khoza and Dr Molefi Oliphant, was instrumental in getting South Africa to be the first African nation to host a FIFA World Cup.

The SAFA President’s first stop will be in Auckland, New Zealand where the draw for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be held.

It takes place on Saturday, 22 October and that is where Banyana Banyana will know the identity of their opponents for next year’s tournament in Australia and New Zealand.

“Dr Jordaan’s trip is two-fold – the SAFA president will also use the time in New Zealand to tell the attendees and many others around the globe about South Africa’s intention to bid to host the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) gave the SAFA president a letter of support ahead of departure and he will be carrying the hopes of not just South Africans, but the entire continent during his stay in Auckland,” said SAFA in a statement.

It goes on further to say that there are several other proposed bids for the 2027 World Cup edition – but ‘South Africa and a joint bid from Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands are the only ones that have been confirmed.’

“We have the infrastructure, the stadiums, the hotels and the training venues, and what helps is that we have already hosted a World Cup of 32 nations in 2010. The infrastructure is in place and we have the capacity to deliver. The world knows our capacity, they have seen the stadiums and they have seen our infrastructure,” added Dr Jordaan on SAFA.net
