SAFA and Hollywoodbets host first ever League Awards

Sports betting operator Hollywoodbets, in collaboration with the South African Football Association (SAFA), will hold the first ever awards evening for top performers for the 2021 season of the Hollywoodbets Super League.

The much-anticipated glamorous event will take place on Saturday, March 26 at the Sandton Convention Centre.

It will be broadcast live on SABC 1 from 20h00.

The purpose is to celebrate women footballers, coaches as well as administrators.

Some of the categories on offer include Player of the Season, Coach of the Season and Goalkeeper of the Season – with the likes of Andisiwe Mgcoyi, Bambanani Mbane, Jerry Tshabalala, Thinasonke Mbuli, Asa Rabalao and Ayanda Mkhize among the nominees.

“With the South African National Women’s League having signed on its first-ever commercial partner, the Hollywoodbets Super League is now able to give female football players an opportunity to showcase their skills and give their audiences an opportunity to see their heroes in action. The awards night promises to shine a spotlight on the incredible sporting talent in this hugely popular women’s league, as well as provide some fun and incredible rewards for the players, coaches and administrators,” said SAFA in a statement.

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies lead the number of nominees with four from the reigning Hollywoodbets Super League champions, followed by three each from University of the Western Cape Ladies and JVW FC, while the Tshwane University of Technology Ladies (TUT), Richmond Ladies and Durban Ladies all have one apiece.

The Chloorkop outfit is the most successful club in the league’s two year existence, with back to back success after lifting the trophy in 2020 and 2021.

Last year they went even further to complete a treble when they won gold at the COSAFA Women’s Club Championship in Durban and crowned that with the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League title in Cairo, Egypt.

Sundown’s Mgcoyi and JVW FC captain Nompumelelo Nyandeni finished as joint top goal scorers with 27 strikes each and will share the inaugural prize.
