HOLLYWOODBETS SUPER LEAGUE – WEEK 16 MARRED BY A CANCELLED MATCH, WHILE SUNDOWNS LADIES OPEN GAP

Week 16 of the 2024 season of the Hollywoodbets Super League was marred by a cancelled match, putting another negative light on the women’s football league.

The clash between hosts City Lads Ladies and TUT Matsatsantsa Ladies from Pretoria did not take place after the home team failed to provide Emergency Medical Services (EMS) which is one the most crucial elements for any match to take place.

The matter will now come before the Disciplinary Hearing of the South African Football Association (SAFA) to decide what action to take.

The incident comes on the heels of the brawl between Royal AM and Lindelani Ladies which happened live on national television two months ago (22 April 2024), but to date there has been no decision on the matter.

Elsewhere, reigning Hollywoodbets Super League champions, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies bounced back in style to register a convincing 5-1 victory over Durban Ladies at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Durban on Saturday (15 June 2024).

The result saw them open a three point gap at the top of the log standings.

This was a crucial outcome for the Brazilians who shared the spoils in a 1-all draw in the Tshwane Derby against TUT Matsatsantsa Ladies prior to their travel to Durban.

After 15 matches, Sundowns Ladies are on 38 points, with the second-placed University of Johannesburg three adrift.

The students were held to a 1-all draw by TS Galaxy Queens in a very tough clash at the UJ Stadium in Soweto.

Since his arrival at the Mpumalanga outfit, head coach Sizwe Sibiya is yet to lose in seven matches – with four wins and three draws. TS Galaxy are fourth on the table sitting on 27 points after 14 outings.

What was billed to be a tough encounter turned out to be what looked like a stroll in the part for the University of the Western Cape (UWC). The third-placed Blues beat the visiting Royal AM 6-2 at the UWC Stadium in Cape Town. The Capetonians are now on 32 points, three behind UJ and six adrift of the log leaders. UWC has a game in hand. Royal AM is eighth on the table on 24 points.

Second from bottom Lindelani Ladies suffered their 12th league match of the season out of 14 games. They lost 1-0 to hosts First Touch Ladies in Polokwane, and are now even more desperate for survival with the second round already upon us. This was the Limpopo side’s second win over the Durban outfit this season following a 4-1 win earlier this year. First Touch are 10th.

Three games were played on Sunday, 16 June.

Eastern Cape’s Thunderbirds Ladies lost for the 14th time in 15 games – this was a 5-1 thumping by the University of Pretoria in Pretoria. Thunderbirds has only managed one draw in the 2024 campaign. Sitting uncomfortably at the basement of the table, the visitors are slowly looking like candidates for relegation if their fortunes don’t change. For Amatuks, this was their first win in seven matches after a difficult period of losses and draws. The university team is fifth on the table.

Newcomers University of Fort Hare are fighting with everything they have to stay away from the relegation zone. In what was another big test, they held a strong JVW to a 1-all draw at the Davidson Stadium in Alice. The result took the students one spot up to ninth position on the table, while JVW remain seventh.

The visiting Richmond United left empty-handed from the Oscar Mphetha Stadium in Polokwane after losing 1-0 Copperbelt Ladies. The Northern Cape side is sixth on the table, while the home side is 11th.
