HOLLYWOODBETS SUPER LEAGUE: Domestic women’s football returns after the FIFA Women’s World Cup

After a month-long football extravaganza that was the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, dished out in Australia and New Zealand, it’s back to domestic football as the Hollywoodbets Super League resumes.

Headlining the action will be a Tshwane Derby between Students from the University of Pretoria and the Tshwane University of Technology.

This midweek clash (Wednesday, 23 August) will take place at the Tuks Stadium, and kicks off at 15h00.

The hosts will be hoping to continue where they left off when they sent shockwaves in the South African elite Women’s Football after handing the high-riding and star-studded fellow newcomers TS Galaxy Queens, their second loss this season.

The students won 2-1, helping them maintain their sixth position on the log standings with 32 points gained from 10 wins, two draws and five losses after 17 outings.

On the other hand, TUT, who went to the World Cup break following a 2-0 loss to City Lads Ladies, will be eager to return to winning ways and move from the 10th spot they find themselves in.

After 18 matches, they have managed only six wins and three draws, while suffering nine losses.

Both sides fell short at the recently-ended FNB Varsity Football tournament – Tuks lost out in the semi-finals, defeated 1-0 by eventual champions, the University of the Western Cape (UWC), while TUT couldn’t get out of the group stages.

Four other Hollywoodbets Super League matches are scheduled Saturday (26 August).

First up, log leaders and reigning champions, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, with a two-point lead, will travel to Polokwane for a date with Copperbelt Ladies at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

JVW will also make the long trek to the Giyani Stadium in Limpopo to face the struggling bottom-of-the-table Ma-Indies, while third-placed TS Galaxy will welcome fourth-placed Royal AM to Mpumalanga.

In a repeat of the 2022 and 2023 FNB Varsity Football final – the University of Johannesburg (UJ) will face off against UWC, perhaps the former with revenge in mind after being deposed as defending champions by the Capetonians.

This match will take place at the UJ Soccer Stadium in Soweto and will be broadcast live on SABC 1.

Kick-off is at 15h00 for all the fixtures.

Only one game is pencilled in for Sunday (27 August) as Tuks Ladies will be back in action to take on the Eastern Cape’s City Lads Ladies, with a 15h00 start at the University of Pretoria Stadium.
