Injuries force Gamede and Daweti out of Banyana Banyana squad

The South African Senior Women’s National (Banyana Banyana) has assembled for a training camp, but will be without the injured University of the Western Cape defender Bongeka Gamede and Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies forward Lelona Daweti.

The pair has been withdrawn from the squad that is currently in camp to prepare for a friendly international against Zambia, and will miss the trip to Lusaka.

They will not be replaced as head coach Desiree Ellis had initially selected 25 players.

The Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana take on their neighbours on Saturday, 12 February.

This is the first time the South Africans gather since they walloped Mozambique in the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations qualifiers back in October 2021.

Desiree Ellis’ charges won 13-nil aggregate after a 7-0 victory in the first leg, which was followed by a 6-0 triumph in the reverse fixture.

The squad of 23 players will travel South Africans travel to Zambia on Thursday, 10 February.

Both nations are using the match to prepare for the upcoming AWCON qualifiers later this month – Banyana Banyana will face Algeria, while the Copper Queens will lock horns with Namibia.

The South Africa vs Algeria clash is scheduled for Friday, 18 February with the second leg pencilled in for the 23rd of February.
