First Touch and UWC claim bragging rights in their respective derbies

  • Seven matches on Week 11 produced winners – only one draw
  • Three teams won at home, four victorious away
  • 26 goals scored
  • Sundowns Ladies biggest winners: 6-1
  • Four teams failed to score: TUT, Thunderbirds, Copperbelt Ladies and Coal City Wizards
  • Three clubs scored three or more: Sundowns Ladies, Royal AM and JVW

Ma-Indies 1 – 2 First Touch Academy:

First Touch Academy emerged victorious in the first Limpopo Derby of the season, played on Week 11 of the 2023 Hollywoodbets Super League.

They beat Ma-Indies Ladies 2-1 in Giyani in their second victory of 2023.

The struggle continues for the bottom-of-the-table Polokwane outfit which has now suffered nine defeats – this one being the third in a row.

TUT 0 – 1 UWC:

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) claimed bragging rights in one of the Varsity Derbies held this past weekend at the University of Pretoria Stadium.

The Capetonians also got the monkey off their back after beating the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) 1-0 for the first time since the start of South Africa’s elite women’s football league.

In the last three seasons, the students from the administrative capital have been a hoodoo team for the coastal side, with three wins and the same number of draws.

But that dominance came to end on Sunday (30 April 2023).

The victory saw the table-topping visitors move to 30 points, two ahead of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies.

TUT has now lost five games in a row and find themselves on position 11 on the table.

UJ Ladies 2 – 2 Tuks Ladies

In the other Varsity Derby played on Saturday (29 April), points were shared between the University of Johannesburg (UJ Ladies) and the University of Pretoria (Tuks Ladies) as they could not be separated following a 2-all draw at the UJ Soccer Stadium in Soweto.

UJ Ladies haven’t won a match in three outings and have dropped to seventh on the table, while newcomers Tuks Ladies are ninth after failing to collect maximum points in the last two fixtures.

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies 6 – 1 Durban Ladies:

A four-goal blitz in 11-minutes saw defending league champions Sundowns Ladies become the biggest winners of the weekend when they defeated the visiting Durban Ladies 6-1 at the University of Pretoria Stadium.

A brace each from Lebogang Ramalepe and Andisiwe Mgcoyi, with Melinda Kgadiete and Lerato Kgasago chipping in with one strike apiece, was enough to see Banyana Ba Style walk away with three points.

With UWC winning their tie against TUT earlier in the day at the same venue, the Brazilians remain in second place on 28 points, two behind the Capetonians.

Richmond United 1 – 0 Copperbelt Ladies:

At Merino Park in De Aar, in the Northern Cape, hosts Richmond United continued their march to the top as they defeated newcomers Copperbelt Ladies 1-0.

Richmond has not lost a match in their last seven outings, while the new kids on the block have now suffered defeats in back to back games.

The Northern Cape side is third on the table on 25 points, five adrift of the leaders, and three behind Sundowns Ladies who are second.

Royal AM 4 – 0 Coal City Wizards

Royal AM scored four without any response from second-from-bottom Coal City Wizards of Witbank at the Mpumalanga Stadium in Hammersdale, KwaZulu Natal.

Royal AM, the only side that beat Sundowns Ladies this season, is fifth on the table.

Thunderbirds Ladies 0 – 2 TS Galaxy Queens

New kids on the block TS Galaxy Queens continue to make waves after notching up their fifth win a row in a 2-0 victory away to Thunderbirds Ladies in East London.

The Mpumalanga side last tasted defeat in February in their first match of the season (1-0 vs City Lads Ladies).

Fourth on the log standings, they have 24 points after seven wins, three draws and one loss.

City Lads Ladies 1 – 3 JVW
JVW’s dominance over City Lads Ladies goes on unabated as the visitors grabbed their third win in as many matches against the coastal side. The clash took place at the Isaac Wolfson Stadium in Gqeberha.

The Blue Diamonds shrugged off fatigue as they defeated their hosts 3-1 with first half strikes from Amanda Mthandi, Robyn Moodaly and Bongiwe Thusi, while City Lads grabbed the consolation goal from the penalty spot in the second half – this was their sixth defeat in a row.

JVW were in De Aar, in the Northern Cape on Thursday (27 April) before travelling to the Eastern Cape.
