Clash of the Titans as reigning champions visit UWC in the Hollywoodbets Super League

Fireworks are expected when two giants of South African women’s football collide in the Mother City on Sunday (3 August 2025) in one of the eight Hollywoodbets Super League fixtures scheduled for this weekend.

Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies and the University of the Western Cape (UWC) will have to dust off cobwebs after being inactive in the league over the last six weeks – due to the international break which saw Banyana Banyana compete in the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 tournament in Morocco from 5-26 July.

The Brazilians provided seven players to the national team while UWC added four of their own – leading the postponement of matches.

But the two sides return to the domestic league and have to play catch-up to finish off the first round of fixtures.

Sundowns Ladies have played 13 games compared to 12 of the Capetonians. The two teams had indifferent results in their last league encounters – Banyana ba Style lost 2-1 to JVW (Sunday, 15 June) while the Blues played to a 1-1 draw in the first Cape Town derby of the season against the University of Cape Town (12 June).

Over the years, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies have dominated this fixture in the 11 clashes players so far – eight victories to two for UWC, with only one match drawn.

They last met earlier this season with the defending champions registering a 1-0 win to take their goal tally to 15 against the Cape outfit, who have only managed four in this match up.

Despite being inactive, the Brazilians remain top of the table on 31 points – just one ahead of second-placed TUT who have played three more games.

UWC have been off the boil this season and found themselves in unfamiliar territory on the ninth spot with 16 points.

Kickoff is at the UWC Stadium is 3pm.
