Banyana Banyana star on the brink of cup glory in Denmark

Banyana Banyana star Bongeka Gamede is on the brink of a gold medal at her new home in Denmark.

The former University of the Western Cape (UWC) captain will be looking to help her team Nordsjaelland Women against runaway log leaders Fortuna Hjorring in the Danish Women’s Cup final on Saturday, 17 May 2025.

Kickoff is at 3pm.

Gamede joined the European outfit in October last year after a stellar season for UWC where she led them to the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League qualification.

She made her official debut in Denmark only in March this year in the 3-1 win over Varde in the quarterfinal of the Danish Women’s Cup.

The 25-year old has played 10 games for her club – seven in the league and three in cup competitions.

Nordsjaelland followed it up with wins over two legs (1-0 and 2-1) against Brondby in the semi-finals to set up a meeting with the tough as teak Fortuna Hjorring.

The two sides have met 25 times with Fortuna having the upper hand of 12 wins compared to eight of Gamede’s team. Five games ended in draws.

The last meeting between the two outfits was a 3-0 win to Fortuna in a league match played in April.

Other than fighting for a gold medal, Gamede’s team is also working hard to cement their EUFA Women’s Champions League spot.

Nordsjaelland are currently second on the log standings on 35 points, one ahead of third-placed Brondby with three games remaining. Fortuna is 10 points ahead on 45.

Only two teams will qualify for the prestigious UEFA Women’s Champions League.

FC Nordsjælland Women made history last year when they secured the domestic double – winning the Danish Cup and lifting the league trophy, which was their first ever league title.
