Banyana Banyana defeat 2026 WAFCON hosts in a friendly

The Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana rounded off the year 2025 in fine style – defeating Morocco 2-0 at Stade D’Agadir on Tuesday (2 December 2025).

Second half goals from Nonhlanhla Mthandi and Noxolo Cesane ensured the South African turned the tables on their stubborn hosts and return home victorious.

Both countries were using this match to prepare for the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 which the North African country will host from 17 March – 3 April 2026.

South Africa came into this encounter with a lot of new faces as the Desiree Ellis-led technical team wanted to have a good look at some of the players with next year’s competition in mind.

There were few chances created by both teams and perhaps the only highlight being the withdrawal of captain Refiloe Jane in the 30th minute – with her place taken by debutant Jessica Wade.

After a goalless opening stanza, Banyana Banyana found the breakthrough in the 70th minute with a Mthandi strike.

The goal spurred on the home side and launched one attack after another – but the South African defence stood resolute.

Ellis brought on some fresh legs with Amogelang Motau, Nthabiseng Majiya, Nonhlanhla Mthandi checking out and replaced by Isabella Ludwig, Bonolo Mokoma and Bongiwe Thusi.

Four minutes before the final whistle Banyana Banyana found their insurance goal as Cesane single-handedly took on the Moroccan defence and slotted a low ball past goalkeeper Errmichi Khadija – and it was game, set and match.

This was Banyana Banyana last match of the year and they will regroup early next year to continue preparations for the WAFCON.

The team is expected to land in Johannesburg on Thursday morning.
