HOLLYWOODBETS SUPER LEAGUE: UWC climb to the top of the log standings

The University of the Western Cape shot to the top of the Hollywoodbets Super League after a 1-0 victory over Ma-Indies Ladies at the UWC Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday, 2 September.

And looking at the current results, the score lines are getting tighter, with only two teams scoring more than two goals in the seven fixtures played this past weekend.

A total of 17 goals were scored.

The University of Pretoria (Tuks Ladies) got a bye – due to the absence of log leaders and reigning champions, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies.

UWC 1 – 0 Ma-Indies:

Following their win, UWC are now on 51 points – one ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies who are taking part in a regional competition – the 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League | COSAFA qualifiers in Durban, and will only return to domestic women’s football in a fortnight.

Both sides are now level on 19 matches played.

In their first round clash, UWC defeated the Limpopo side 5-0.

Ma-Indies have now lost 11 matches in a row – 19 in total – and are left with nine matches to the end of the season to have any chance of reviving their ailing campaign.

They last won a match in April when they beat City Lads Ladies 3-0.

TUT 0 – 1 Royal AM:

Royal AM jumped to third place following a narrow 1-0 win over the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in Pretoria.

The KwaZulu Natal side is on 43 points, eight behind log leaders UWC and seven adrift of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies who are out of commission as they are taking part in the CAF Women’s Champions League COSAFA qualifiers 2023 in Durban.

TUT has now lost 11 games from the 20 they have played – winning only six are in position 11 on the table.

TS Galaxy Queens 2 – 2 JVW:

Royal AM started the weekend on 40 points – level with TS Galaxy Queens and JVW – but have now opened a two-point gap after the latter two team played to a 2-all draw at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium.

The Mpumalanga team took the lead before the Blue Diamonds came back to score two goals and had the advantage but the hosts netted a 90th minute penalty to share the spoils – a repeat of their first round result (1-1).

TS Galaxy is fourth on the table, while JVW is fifth.

City Lads Ladies 1 – 0 Thunderbirds Ladies:

City Lads Ladies won the Eastern Cape Derby, beating Thunderbirds Ladies 1-0 at the Gelvandale Stadium in Gqeberha.

The home side moved one notch up to the 12th spot with 17 points in 20 outings.

The visitors sink further into relegation quagmire and remain on position 15 after 20 games, with nine points.

Thunderbirds haven’t won a game in 10 fixtures.

Coal City Wizards 1 – 3 First Touch FC:

First Touch was one of the biggest winners this past weekend with a 3-1 victory over the relegation-haunted Coal City Wizards of Mpumalanga at the Puma Stadium. The Limpopo outfit is now 10th on the log standings with 24 points after 20 rounds of fixtures have been played.

Coal City is 14th and in serious danger of being dragged into the relegation quagmire. They are just four points above 15thplaced Thunderbirds.

Copperbelt Ladies 0 – 2 Durban Ladies:

After a fine start to the South African elite women’s football league, newcomers Copperbelt Ladies are finding life a bit difficult in the big leagues.

They lost 2-0 at home in Polokwane – with no win in nine matches. They suffered a 3-1 defeat to the same team in the first round, and are now 13th on the table with 16 points, while Durban Ladies is ninth.

UJ 3 – 1 Richmond United:

With no maximum points in nine matches, the travelling Richmond United suffered a 3-1 loss in Soweto to the University of Johannesburg (UJ Ladies).

The Northern Cape outfit’s last win (1-0) was in April against Copperbelt Ladies.

The students are seventh, just one spot ahead of Richmond United and the duo is separated by four points – 35 and 31 respectively.
