UWC back on top, Richmond and JVW cancel each other out

Khanya Xesi was the star of the show as she scored a double brace to take the University of the Western Cape (UWC) back to the summit of the Hollywoodbets Super League table after a convincing 5-1 victory against the struggling City Lads Ladies.

The Week 10 catch-up clash was played at Parow Park in Cape Town.

Xesi struck as early as the 9th minute, and followed up 13 minutes later – and by the 41st minute she had registered her hattrick for a 3-0 lead at the break.

Captain and defender Bongeka Gamede chipped with the fourth goal after the recess (64’) before Xesi completed her four goal haul in the 72nd minute.

Siphosethu Nojoko scored the visitors’ consolation goal 10 minutes from time.

After 10 rounds of matches played, the students are on 27 points, two more than the reigning league champions, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies who are in second place.

UWC has won nine matches, with one loss and are yet to draw this season.

In another catch-up fixture also played on Freedom Day (Thursday, 27 April 2023), the visiting JVW twice led their lead slip as they were held to a 2-all draw by Richmond United at Merino Park in De Aar, Northern Cape.

The Blue Diamonds opened the scoring 21 minutes into the clash through Alocia Lelaka but Sharone Oliphant cancelled the lead four minutes from the break.

Five minutes after the restart Gabriela Salgado restored the advantage. But Jabulile Mazibuko was unfortunate to score an own goal in the 65th minute to make it 2-2.

And that is how it ended, as the hosts remained in third place while JVW retained their seventh spot.
