Banyana Banyana move up the FIFA rankings after WAFCON win

A good showing by the recently-crowned African champions South Africa, has seen them rise to second place on the continent in the latest FIFA/Coca Cola Women’s World rankings released on Friday (5 August).

The Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana romped to six wins in as many matches in Morocco to lift their maiden TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations trophy.

The South Africans moved four places up – from 58 to 54.

Despite finishing in fourth place at the Women’s tournament in Morocco, the Super Falcons are still top of the table on the continent, ahead of Desiree Ellis’ charges, while the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon are third, with Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire completing the top five.

Nigeria dropped seven places on the world rankings, registering the biggest decline in terms of points – minus 69.33.

The former African champions were 39th in June but have now fallen to 46th.

The biggest movers were first time WAFCON bronze-medallists Zambia, who jumped 23 places to the 80th spot in the world, which saw them occupy 10th place on the continent.

Also in the top 10 are Equatorial Guinea, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria.

The quartet of South Africa, Morocco, Zambia and Nigeria are heading to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

World champions and recent CONCACAF winners, the USA, remain number one in the world, followed by Germany and Sweden.

Recently-crowned European champions, England has moved four places to fourth, just one spot ahead of France.

Netherlands, Canada, Spain, Brazil and Korea DPR make up the top 10 in the world.

Cambodia, Guinea-Bissau, Timor-Leste and Turkmenistan are the latest countries to be included in the FIFA world rankings, making it a record 185 nations listed in the standings.

The next edition of the Women’s World Ranking will be published in October, before the draw for the Women’s World Cup.
