Sundowns Ladies suffers first league defeat

Reigning Hollywoodbets Super League champions Mamelodi Sundowns travelled to Cape Town to face the University of the Western Cape with the hope of continuing the defence of their title.

But this time it was no to be as coach Thinasonke Mbuli’s charges gave as much as they got – the Brazilians came across a UWC side that turned the tables on them.

The visitors were stunned by two first half goals from Khanya Xesi and Sibulele Holweni in the 13th and 31st minutes to take a commanding half time lead.

UWC held on against their much-fancied opponents to rewrite the history books by becoming the first team to beat defending champions – and also the first to register a clean sheet against the Brazilians’ marauding forwards who have been scoring with ease in every match.

The clash also a return to action for UWC captain Bongeka Gamede after a 10-month layoff due to injury

The last time Banyana Ba Style lost a match was back in 2018 against Bloemfontein Ladies.

After matches, the Brazilians are in second position on the league table – three points behind leaders JVW who remain the only unbeaten side in the competition. The Blue Diamonds are on 15 points.
