A 23-year old record was broken when Spanish Women’s League champions, Barcelona, hosted arch-rivals Real Madrid in a sell-out crowd at the Nou Camp with 91,553 fans at the stadium to watch the match.
The biggest ever crowd to watch a women’s football was at the 1999 World Cup in the USA, where 91,195 football enthusiast were in attendance.
The Catalans won the clash 5-2 on the night to go through 8-3 on aggregate in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
Barcelona captain and Ballon’Dor winner, Alexi PUtellas described the scene as magical.
It was the team’s first appearance in front of supporters at the iconic stadium.
“This has been utterly magical. When the match finished the fans simply didn’t want to go home, there was such a connection between them and us while we celebrated. I saw a lot of girls, children with that spark in their eyes. It’s amazing to be part of history,” said Putellas.
The club had said that filling the biggest stadium in Europe would “send out a clear message to aspiring young girls all around the world – you can do it too!”
