Mixed fortunes for South Africans in the UEFA Women’s Europa Cup

It was a bittersweet night for the remaining South Africans in the UEFA Women’s Europa Cup on Thursday night (19 November 2025).

Bongeka Gamede’s Danish outfit Nordsjaelland have progressed to the quarterfinals of the competition after defeating Mura 4-0 – 5-0 on aggregate.

After a 1-0 win at home, Nordsjaelland continued where they left off and finished off the match away in Slovenia, booking their spot in the next round.

Gamede and company will face Germany’s Eintracht Frankfurt who knocked out Dutch side PSV Eindhoven. The clash takes place in February next year.

Nordsjaelland have a hectic season as they juggle European competition with league and cup games.

They are currently fifth on the log standings in the domestic league, on 18 points – 14 behind log leaders Koge. Nordsjaelland are also in the quarterfinals of the Danish Women’s Cup.

While Gamede was celebrating progression into the next round in European competition, it was the end of the journey for Linda Motlhalo and company at Glasgow City.

Coming into the match following a 1-all draw from the first leg against Sporting CP, the Scottish champions found the going tough in Lisbon as they lost 3-1 on the night – and 4-2 on aggregate. Both sides were tied at 1-all at the end of regulation time, with Glasgow the first on the scoresheet.

But the Portuguese side upped the tempo and scored two goals in extra-time to advance to the quarterfinals where they will meet Hammarby who brushed aside Ajax.

Glasgow City return home to focus on the league title where they are leading the log standings by six points after 11 rounds of fixtures.

City are on 31 points, followed by Hearts on 25 while Hibernian are third a further three points back.

Glasgow face Hibs on Sunday (23 November) in the Scottish Women’s Women’s League.
