“𝑪𝒂𝒑𝒆 𝑫𝒆𝒓𝒃𝒚 loading…
The first Cape Derby of the season is here.
The rivalry is real.
The stakes are high.
The atmosphere will be electric!
You don’t want to miss out
Two universities. One City. One Winner!”
That’s how the first ever Cape Derby in the Hollywoodbets Super League in the current season was billed on social media by the University of the Western Cape (UWC).

But the Blues and the University of Cape Town (UCT) cancelled each other out in a 1-1 all draw under lights at the UWC Stadium on Thursday, 12 June 2025.
The visitors, who are newcomers to the South African elite women’s football league, stunned their more accomplished and experienced neighbours with a goal in the fourth minute, but the hosts responded with a striker of their own 10 minutes from the break.
In the second half neither team was able to rattle the net and the spoils were shared in the Mother City.

The last Cape Derby in this league was on Wednesday, 16 November 2022 when UWC defeated Vasco da Gama 1-0 before the latter’s status was sold and brought by TS Galaxy Queens early in the 2023.
Vasco had spent only one season (2022) in the Hollywoodbets Super League after gaining promotion from the Sasol League at the end of the 2021 campaign.
The result leaves UWC at position eight after 12 games with 16 points from four wins and the same number of draws and losses.

UCT is five spots adrift (13th) on eight points. They have played 11 matches, winning two, drawing another two and suffering seven defeats.

UWC 1-1 University of Cape Town
The two teams will not be in action this weekend but there are seven other matches scheduled.

All eyes will perhaps be on the much-anticipated fixture between JVW and reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies on Sunday (15 June) – this after the latter was docked points for arriving late for a match in Durban last weekend. This meant they “suffered” their first loss of the season and even conceded for the first time in the 2025 campaign. News reaching the CentreCircle.online say the matter may not be done and dusted as the Brazilians were not happy with the outcome.
JVW and Sundowns Ladies face off at the UJ Stadium at 3pm as part of a double header.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ Ladies) will kickstart the proceedings at 11am at same venue. Elsewhere the winless Durban Ladies visit the University of Pretoria at the Tuks Main Stadium at 1pm.
In other matches pencilled in for Saturday (14 June), Copperbelt Ladies take on Richmond United Ladies, City Lads Ladies go toe to toe with Royal AM, First Touch Ladies face TUT Matsatsantsa Ladies while the University of Fort Hare will host TS Galaxy Queens.
