Banyana Banyana’s Bongeka Gamede was on the losing side in the Danish Women’s Cup final when FC Nordsjaelland went down 1-0 to league champions Fortuna Hjorring in extra time, with only three minutes left on the clock.
The clash took place at the Lyngby Stadium on Saturday (17 May 2025) with the South African international playing the full match.
This was her first Cup final since joining the Danish team in October last year.
Japanese striker Risako Watanabe came off the bench to score the winner in the 117th minute.
The victory gave Fortuna Hjorring their fifth double (league and cup) – 1995, 1996, 2002, 2016 and 2025.
Despite the defeat, Gamede came in for special praise after she closed down the lethal Joy Omewa from Nigeria – she is Fortuna Hjorring’s top goal scorer in the league with 18 goals in 21 games.
With a silver medal safely secured, the former University of the Western Cape (UWC) captain is still within touching distance of the remaining 2025/26 UEFA Women’s Champions League spot – the other has been claimed by Fortuna.
Nordsjaelland is second on the table on 35 points, with three matches left to the end of the season. But breathing down their necks is Brondby just one point behind in third place.
Gamede’s side has a league date with Odense this coming weekend (Saturday, 24 May 2025), with Koge coming up early next month (Saturday, 7 June 2025) after the international break.
FC Nordsjaelland will face newly crowned Denmark champions Fortuna on Saturday, 14 June 2025 in the final match of the season.
A team that finishes third on the table will find consolation in qualifying for the 2025/26 UEFA Women’s Europa Cup – Europe’s secondary women’s club football tournament.
It takes place between 10 September 2025 and 2 or 3 May 2026.
