2024 HOLLYWOODBETS SUPER LEAGUE: Clash of the titans and a Varsity Derby headline Week 2

Fresh from annihilating Royal AM 4-0 in their opening match of the 2024 Hollywoodbets Super League season, reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies will go into what looks on paper like a tough battle.

The Brazilians are up against TS Galaxy Queens who have a spring in their step after a clean job against JVW where they won 2-0 last weekend.

This will be the third meeting between the two sides with the Mpumalanga outfit yet to defeat the defending champions following a 1-0 loss and a 1-all stalemate in 2023.

The clash takes place at the UJ Soccer Stadium in Soweto, kicking off at 13h00 and the match could see the return of defenders Bambanani Mbane and Thato Letsotso after a long lay-off due to injury. Both players were unused substitutes against Royal AM last Sunday (3 March), an indication that they are ready to bounce back into action.

The University of Pretoria Stadium in Tshwane is the place to be to witness the second Varsity Derby of the year when the University of Pretoria tackle newcomers, the University of Fort Hare at 15h00.

The two teams come into the match at the back of contrasting results – the hosts lost 2-0 while UFH collected three points in only their first day in the big league.

Lindelani Ladies – KwaZulu Natal

Across town at the TUT Pretoria Stadium, and happening at the same time, new kids on the block Lindelani Ladies will be the guests of TUT Matsatsantsa Ladies who are still smarting from a 2-1 loss suffered at the hands of other newcomers, UFH.

The KwaZulu Natal outfit will be in seventh heaven following their convincing 3-0 win that saw them top the league standings overnight on Saturday (2 March 2024).

City Lads Ladies – Eastern Cape

Elsewhere, at the Westbourne Oval in Gqeberha, City Lads Ladies entertain Royal AM as both sides will be looking to get their campaign back on track following a draw and a loss respectively.

Thunderbirds Ladies suffered a heavy 3-0 beating at the hands of Lindelani Ladies, and will want to turn the tables on Richmond United who could only get a point from their first match – the clash takes place in East London at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium.

UWC Stadium – Cape Town

At the UWC Stadium in Cape Town, the University of the Western Cape (UWC) will be eager to return to last year’s form where they kept Sundowns Ladies on their toes.

The Capetonians managed only a point last weekend and will be hoping their new signings – Relebogile Phala, Nwabisa Qoba, Ongeziwe Ndlangisa, Ronnel Donnelly, Nolubabalo Sishuba – help them in their mission. The Blues welcome a wounded First Touch Ladies who ran into a brick wall against the University of Johannesburg in a 1-4 defeat.

The first teams to go into battle on Saturday will be Copperbelt Ladies who will entertain Durban Ladies at the Baroka Global Village in Polokwane.

Kick-off is at 11h30.

The Durbanites registered a victory and will be keen to continue where they left off, while Copperbelt will be hoping to build on the point they bagged.

Refilwe Maseko – UJ Ladies Captain

Only one match will be played on Sunday, 10 March.

The visiting JVW, who were downed by TS Galaxy, will be eager to return home with something when they face UJ Ladies, who were one of the big winners last weekend after registering an impressive a 4-1 victory, with captain Refilwe Maseko grabbing a brace to lead the goal scorers’ chart alongside Boitumelo Rabale of Sundowns Ladies who netted two goals against Royal AM.

The two meet at the UJ Soccer Stadium in Soweto at 15h00.
