HOLLYWOODBETS SUPER LEAGUE AWARDS: 2023 Nominees revealed – who will walk away with the glory?

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies have wrapped up their fourth Hollywoodbets Super League title in a row – no other team has won the trophy since the start of the South African elite Women’s Football League.

With the destination of the trophy decided, now it’s time for individuals to be awarded after a long and perhaps gruelling season.

The glittering end of the year ceremony will take place on Saturday, 9 December in Johannesburg.

Some players were prominent during the campaign, and it comes as no surprise that they have made the top list.

Sundowns Ladies finished in first place, followed by the University of the Western Cape (UWC), with JVW in third place for the first time since promotion and Royal AM fifth. Newcomers TS Galaxy Queens and the University of Pretoria (Tuks Ladies) made great strides as they occupied positions third and sixth respectively. Completing the top 10 are Richmond United (7th), Durban Ladies (8th), University of Johannesburg (9) and the Tshwane University of Technology (10th).

All the top 10 teams have nominees in the awards, along with the 13th placed City Lads Ladies.

Thubelihle Shamase is the outright winner of the Top Goal Scorer for 2023 with 22 goals to her name, taking over TS Galaxy Queens’ Nompumelelo Nyandeni who topped the charts in the last two years (she was joint with Sundowns Ladies’ Andisiwe Mgcoyi in 2021).

Boitumelo Rabale was named Player of the Year in 2022 and is nominated for the same award again.

Last year’s winner, Jerry Tshabalala is also a nominee again in the Coach of the Year award, and will battle it out with UWC’s Thinasonke Mbuli – also a nominee in 2022 – as well as newcomer Maud Khumalo of Tuks Ladies.

In the goalkeeping department, Katlego Moletsane of Royal AM walked away with the Goalkeeper of the Year award in 2022 – she returns as a nominee, and so does UWC’s Regirl Ngobeni – who won in 2021. They are joined by JVW’s Kaylin Swart.

It’s a completely new line-up for the Young Player of the Year award – won last year by Nthabiseng Majiya of Richmond United. This time it’s the trio of Adrielle Mibe (UJ), Mmabatho Mogale (Tuks Ladies) and Sikelelwa Mhlanga (City Lads Ladies).
