HOLLYWOODBETS SUPER LEAGUE: Another league match postponed, but three derbies on the cards this weekend

The Hollywoodbets Super League clash between reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies and hosts Durban Ladies, scheduled for Saturday, 16 September 2023, has been postponed for safety concerns.

The match was due to be played at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi, near Durban – the same venue where last weekend’s two fixtures – Royal AM vs City Lads Ladies and Durban Ladies vs TS Galaxy Queens – were called off between for the same reasons.

This is where, according to SABC Sport who were scheduled to broadcast the two games, Inkatha Freedom Party supporters stormed the stadium gate whilst firing gun shots into the air.

The IFP supporters were rioting following the passing away on Saturday morning (9 September 2023) of their founding president Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, whose funeral will take place on Saturday, 16 September in Ulundi, KwaZulu Natal.

But seven other Hollywoodbets Super League fixtures will go ahead as planned this weekend.

Four matches will take place on Saturday, with First Touch and Ma-Indies Ladies locking horns in a Limpopo Derby that will be played at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

After 12 losses on the trot, Ma-Indies will be hoping for a change of fortunes with eight matches remaining to the end of the season.

They are bottom of the table on six points and have suffered 20 losses this campaign, with only two wins.

Placed 10th, First Touch will be eager to garner more points to move into the top eight bracket.

UWC vs TUT: 15H00

The home side is top of the table on 57 points, seven ahead of Sundowns Ladies, and will be out to pull away even further, especially with the Brazilians – who have two games in hand – not in action this weekend.

UWC has won their last eight games, and will not allow TUT to halt their momentum.

TUT, on the other hand, have lost their previous three fixtures and will be hoping for positive results to push them up from their 11th position on the log standings.

JVW vs City Lads: 15h00

Eastern Cape’s City Lads Ladies travel to Tsakani Stadium, east of Johannesburg, for a date with JVW, one of the title contenders.

Copperbelt Ladies vs Richmond United: 13h00

In the earlier match on Saturday, Copperbelt Ladies welcome Richmond United to Polokwane.

The Northern Cape outfit is lying 8th on the table and is on a mission to protect their top eight spot. The home side is 12thand have done well so far for newcomers, but will not want to rest on their laurels.

The first round clash ended in a 1-0 win for Richmond United.

Coal City Wizards vs Royal AM: 11h30

Three other fixtures will be played on Sunday, with a double header set for the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium in Mpumalanga.

With just four wins in 22 outings, and 17 losses, Coal City is 14th with 13 points – three ahead of second from bottom Thunderbirds Ladies.

TS Galaxy Queens vs Thunderbirds: 15h00

TS Galaxy Queens, newcomers in the South African elite women’s football league, are other title contenders. They have two matches in hand, and on 41 points. They face Eastern Cape’s Thunderbirds Ladies, who are trying to survive this season.

The clash is the second of the double header at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium, and the hosts will be looking for victory to keep their title aspirations on track.

TS Galaxy Queens are fifth on the table.

University Of Pretoria Vs University Of Johannesburg

In the second Varsity Derby of the weekend, the University of Pretoria (Tuks Ladies) welcome old foes the University of Johannesburg (UJ Ladies) to the University of Pretoria Stadium.

The two teams come into this fixture with contrasting fortunes – after eight wins in a row, Tuks Ladies were stopped dead in their tracks, and suffered back to back defeats in their last two matches, while UJ Ladies won their two previous games.

They are both level on 38 points – sixth and seventh respectively on the table.

The first round encounter ended in a two-all draw.

Meanwhile, due to the Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana back in action, the trio of Sundowns Ladies, UWC and JVW have had their matches postponed next weekend as they have three or more players each in the South African Senior Women’s National Team that is travelling to the USA for two friendly matches against the host nation.
