UWC, Wits, UJ, TUT seal 2025 Varsity Women’s Football semi-final spots

Upcoming fixtures:

  • CPUT vs Univen: 1pm
  • UP-Tuks vs NWU: 3pm
  • UWC vs Wits: 5pm
  • UJ vs TUT: 7pm

Reigning Varsity Women’s Football champions, the University of the Western Cape (UWC), will face Wits University in the semi-final of the 2025 edition of the competition, while the University of Johannesburg (UJ) will lock horns with the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in the other semi-final.

Univen and CPUT, who finished the round robin stage bottom of Group A and B respectively, will kickstart the day’s proceedings at 1pm. These will be followed by the clash between third-placed teams in their groups, with UP-Tuks taking on NWU.

The two games will take place on Monday, 8 September 2025 at the UJ Soccer Stadium in Soweto. Tuks was the only Hollywoodbets Super League side that missed out on a top four spot, with UWC, UJ and TUT all going through.

UJ

UWC, TUT and UJ are making back to back appearances in the semi-finals whilst Wits are the only newcomers from the 2024 tournament (which had NWU as the fourth team).

The semi-finalists and match-ups were confirmed on Sunday (7 September) when Thinasonke Mbuli’s Capetonians continued where they left off in the last two matches, grabbing their third win in a row to finish the round-robin stage without defeat.

The Blues defeated Tuks 2-0 with goals from Mmabatho Mogale and Chelsea Daniels. With the result, the Tshwane outfit fell short and were pipped to second spot by TUT on goal difference.

Maud Khumalo’s Tuks finished in third place on four points while the University of Venda (Univen) ended fourth without any points after three consecutive defeats for the debutants.

Wits

Wits University failed to make the last four in 2024 but battled hard this year to reach the semi-finals. They had to endure difficult moments against a resilient North West University, and managed to share the spoils in a 2-all draw, which was enough for the Johannesburg-based team to progress, while for NWU it was a case of so near yet so far.

Wits sailed to a 2-0 lead in the first stanza – goals coming from Aliyaah Allie and Lusanda Nyathi, but Veronica Maswanganyi reduced the deficit to make it 2-1 at recess.

The North West Province side continued where they left off and went in search for further goals – and they were rewarded with an equaliser through Mbalenhle Dlikilili in the final moments of the match, but they ran out of time and a spot in the top four.
