Relegation battle done and dusted, focus on the title – Sundowns Ladies on track to retain trophy

With the identity of the relegated teams confirmed, the focus is now on the title race.

Already, two KwaZulu Natal sides, Durban Ladies and Royal AM have dropped down to the lower tier of South African women’s football after failing to survive the axe.

At the top of the table, reigning Hollywoodbets Super League champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies need just three wins and a draw in their remaining six matches to retain their Hollywoodbets Super League title – which will be an unprecedented record six times.

They lifted the first trophy in the 2019/2020 season and have never let go of it.

The Brazilians are currently on 62 points after 24 games, with TS Galaxy Queens five points behind, but the latter have played one more match – the Rockets can only get to 72 points, provided they win all their five games.

At some point coach Sizwe Sibiya’s Rockets were closing in on the title, but they fizzled out towards the latter stages of the campaign – they are not out of the race completely, but it is no longer in their hands and will have to depend on other teams for help.

Sundowns Ladies still have to face TS Galaxy Queens in the last match of the season – and will be hoping they will have wrapped up the season by then.

But before that, Banyana ba Style take on the relegated Durban Ladies, Ezemvelo, Copperbelt Ladies, City Lads Ladies and the University of Johannesburg.

Interestingly, the Brazilians did not lose to these teams with the exception of Limpopo’s Copperbelt Ladies who shared the spoils with them.

TS Galaxy Queens have a more difficult run in – starting with First Touch Ladies, followed by the impressive University of Fort Hare, the stubborn University of the Western Cape and University of Pretoria.

The Rockets had indifferent results against the five teams – winning only one (vs Tuks) but lost two and drew two.

Sundowns Ladies and Durban Ladies meet on Saturday (1 November) at the Lucas Moripe Stadium – in one of the five matches this weekend. TS Galaxy Queens face First Touch Ladies at the Kabokweni Stadium in Mpumalanga on Sunday (2 November).

In other fixtures, fourth-placed JVW tackle Richmond United Ladies at the UJ Stadium in Soweto; Ezemvelo travel to the Mother City for a date with the University of the Western Cape (UWC) while the relegated Royal AM goes toe to toe with the University of Pretoria (Tuks).
