JVW go top of the women’s league as Sundowns stumbles

JVW have shot to the top of the Hollywoodbets Super League table after log leaders and defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies suffered a shock 2-0 defeat at the hands the University of the Western Cape (UWC).

Khanya Xesi and Sibulele Holweni scored the two goals in the first half to give the students victory in Cape Town.

This was their third win in five outings – with one loss and a draw that sees them occupy fourth place on the table with 10 points, tied with third-placed Thunderbirds who have a superior goal difference.

UWC is the first side to defeat the reigning league champions this season – and it is the first loss Banyana Ba Style have suffered since 2019 when they went down to Bloemfontein Celtic Ladies.

JVW benefited from the Brazilians mishap and flew to the number one spot after they beat City Lads Ladies 1-0 away in Qgeberha.

The Blue Diamonds remain the only undefeated side in the league this season after five outings.

They have 15 points – three more than second-placed Sundowns.

There was also a maiden win of the season for Durban Ladies when they beat First Touch FC 2-1.

In other matches, Thunderbirds failed to close the gap at the top as they played to a goalless draw against TUT Ladies while UJ Ladies and Richmond United shared the spoils.

Mpumalanga’s Coal City Wizards had no mercy for the winless Golden Ladies as they won 6-1, with Ma-Indies brushing aside Vasco da Gama 3-2.

There were goals galore in the Free State derby when Tsunami Queens failed to protect a 2-0 nil and ended up drawing 2-all with Bloemfontein Celtic Ladies.
