The University of the Western Cape (UWC) bounced back in fine style following their draw in the opening match of the 2024 Hollywoodbets Super League season last weekend.
The Capetonians were merciless against Limpopo’s First Touch Ladies, beating them 7-1 at the UWC Stadium on Saturday, 9 March – making them the biggest winners and contributing immensely to the 33 goals scored on Week 2.
The visitors, who are bottom of the table, have now conceded 11 goals in two outings after they were thumped 4-1 by the University of Johannesburg (UJ) last weekend. The fixture also saw the return of defender Bongeka Gamede and midfielder Siyabulela Holweni for UWC after lengthy injury spells on the side-lines, with the latter finding the back of the net in the 7-1 rout. The duo’s presence is a welcome relief to Desiree Ellis, Head Coach of the Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana. This comes as the Senior Women’s National team gears up for the upcoming Olympic qualifiers against Nigeria next month.

The match between Sundowns Ladies and TS Galaxy Queens, which was billed as the ‘Clash of the Titans,’ turned out to be nowhere near the description.
The Brazilians won 5-3 but it was no spectacle, as they led 5-1 at some point but took their foot off the pedal to almost allow the Mpumalanga side back into the match.

New recruit Nthabiseng Majiya netted a brace in the clash, making it three goals in two games for her new side, and placing her among the top goal scorers.
Banyana ba Style have now scored hit the back of the net nine times after beating Royal AM 4-0 last weekend.
“Look, the game (vs TS Galaxy Queens) wasn’t that difficult when I looked at it in terms of how we’ve applied ourselves – it was not a difficult game, I think we made it difficult for ourselves with a couple a few silly mistakes that we committed, especially at the back,” said Jerry Tshabalala, head coach of Sundowns Ladies.

The other big winners of the weekend were Copperbelt Ladies who thumped the visiting Durban Ladies 4-1 at the Baroka Global Village in Polokwane.
This was a setback for the KwaZulu Natal outfit after their convincing 2-0 win over the University of Pretoria (Tuks Ladies) in their last outing.

After an impressive start to life in the big league, 2024 Hollywoodbets Super League debutants Lindelani Ladies and the University of Fort Hare (UFH) were brought down to earth as they lost their second match in the campaign.
Lindelani Ladies fell 1-0 to TUT Matsatsantsa at the TUT Pretoria Stadium, while in the second Varsity Derby of the season, Tuks Ladies defeated UFH 2 – 1 at the University of Pretoria Stadium in Tshwane.

Eastern Cape’s Thunderbirds Ladies surrendered all three points to Richmond United as they suffered their second consecutive loss of the season. The Northern Cape side won 2-0 at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in East London.

JVW suffered back-to-back defeats as they fell 3-1 to the University of Johannesburg in Soweto.
This was the second win on the trot for the students, taking them to second spot on the table – level on points with log leaders, Sundowns Ladies. UJ Ladies have now scored seven goals in two games.
But it was a good day for Zethu Biyana, younger sister to Sundowns Ladies and Banyana Banyana midfielder, Kholosa Biyana, who made her debut for the Blue Diamonds after being named in the starting 11.

Only one match was drawn, with City Lads Ladies and Royal AM sharing the spoils in a 1-all draw at the Westbourne Oval in Gqeberha. Both sides are yet to win after two rounds of fixtures.
