HOLLYWOODBETS SUPER LEAGUE – THUNDERBIRDS GRAB FIRST POINT, UWC & UJ WIN VARSITY DERBIES, SUNDOWNS LADIES HELD

After 10 consecutive defeats, Thunderbirds Ladies managed to grab their first point of the season at the 11th time of trying.

The Eastern Cape outfit faced off with Durban Ladies and the duo produced a six-goal thriller, which ended in a 3-all stalemate at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Bisho.

Thunderbirds remain at the basement of the table while Durban Ladies is two spots above in 14th place on seven points.

UWC vs TUT

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) were the biggest winners of Week 11 for the 2024 Hollywoodbets Super League as they demolished fellow students TUT Matsatsantsa Ladies 6-1 at the UWC Stadium in Cape Town.

The result not only won the Blues bragging rights in the battle of the Universities but also saw them move up to third on the table on 23 points – just two behind log leaders and reigning champions, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies and second placed University of Johannesburg.

Two goals in the first half and a further four in the second stanza was enough to give the Capetonians maximum points, and their fifth win on the trot.

This was the ninth meeting between the two institutions of learning dating back to the 2019/20 season.

TUT has been dominating the clashes but have since gone off the boil in recent times, allowing the UWC back in the mix, winning the last three encounters.

Following the defeat, the Tshwane side has dropped three places down to eighth.

University of Johannesburg

The University of Pretoria Stadium was the scene of another Varsity Derby in Week 11.

In a fiercely contested match-up, the University of Johannesburg notched up their fourth victory in a row when they defeated a stubborn Amatuks 2-1 in only their third meeting in the elite women’s football league.

The visitors grabbed two early goals in the first half before they were given a scare late in the second period when the home side pulled one back – but it was too little too late.

UJ Ladies climb to the second spot on 25 points – level with defending champions Sundowns Ladies, while Maud Khumalo’s University of Pretoria, which has now lost back-to-back matches, drop from third to fifth due to other results in the league.

Amatuks are on 21 points.

In another much-anticipated fixture of the weekend, log leaders Sundowns Ladies were held to a 1-all draw by an energetic JVW at the UJ Soccer Stadium in Soweto – putting to an abrupt halt to a five-match winning streak.

After seven games between the two outfits, the Blue Diamonds are yet to register a win over the Brazilians – the former has lost five, with two drawn.

Banyana ba Style are still top of the table on 25 points, and this was their first shared points of the season.

JVW has dropped two spots down to sixth place, and they are sitting on 18 points.

This was Head Coach Sizwe Sibiya’s third match in charge since his reinstatement and has claimed the maximum nine points.

The Rockets are on 21 points – level with Amatuks, while Copperbelt Ladies are on 12 points and lie on the 10th spot.

Lindelani Ladies

Newcomers Lindelani Ladies’ poor run continues – they suffered a 2-1 loss to City Lads Ladies at the Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban. This was their eighth defeat of the season in 10 outings.

The visitors bounced back from a humiliating 7-1 loss in their previous fixture to register their third win of 2024, leaving them on 11 points and 12th on the table.

The Durban side remains second from bottom on four points.

University of Fort Hare

After a convincing 5-nil win in their previous fixture, the other new kids on the block, the University of Fort Hare, were brought down to earth following a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Richmond United at the Davidson Stadium in Alice.

With the win, the Northern Cape outfit jumps one level up to seventh on the table on 18 points, while Fort Hare does the opposite – drops one spot down to 13th.
