Banyana Banyana star allays fears about injury concerns

Mexico-based Banyana Banyana forward, Jermaine Seoposenwe has moved quickly to allay fears of injury concerns after reports surfaced that she could be on the side-lines for a long time.

This came on the back of her club, FC Juarez releasing a statement on Monday (17 April) that the Cape Town-born player was part of the players out injured.

“FC Juarez reports on the following players: Julitha Singano has a medial collateral ligament sprain. Paulina Solis has an injury to the anterior rectus muscle, second degree. On the other hand, the front, Jermaine Seoposenwe has Achilles tendon tendinitis. The recovery time will depend on the evolution of each player,” said the club in a statement.

With her Liga MX Femenil side in the hunt for a play-off place and the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup around the corner (20 July – 20 August) for the national team, many feared that the injury could not have come at the most unfortunate time both club and country.

She was not in the match day squad on Tuesday (18 April) when they lost 2-3 to Santos Laguna, further denting their aspirations of qualifying for the playoffs.

They are currently seventh on the 16-team league table with 21 points – and only eight clubs feature in the play-offs.

FC Juarez’s next assignment is on Monday (24 April) against ninth-placed Toluca, who are three points adrift. It is still not clear when Seoposenwe will return to action.

The Cape Town-born star has come out to say her injury is not as bad as initially reported – and she took to social media to set the record straight.

“Regarding the rumours and articles surrounding my injury – I have not ruptured my Achilles, I am however suffering from some tendinitis. The medical staff at my team have advised me to undergo a treatment called Percutaneous Micro-electrolysis to help with pain and facilitate healing in my tendon. The treatment basically requires me to not do much weight barring exercises, especially running for one week and then I’ll gradually return to play based on how I am feeling. I want to get back as soon as I can, because my team is at a crucial part in the season, and I would like to play my part in helping FC Juarez reach their first ever playoff. However, I am also fully aware of the World Cup on the horizon – which is why the medical team and myself will try to navigate through this period as best we can, as to avoid a serious long-term injury,” said Seoposenwe.

The striker joined FC Juarez in 2022 and has been a hit since her arrival.

She rewrote the Mexican history books women’s football in September last year when she netted just nine seconds into the match against Necaxa.

Seoposenwe went on to score a brace in that fixture and was named the Player of the Match.

The 29-year-old has become a vital cog in Desiree Ellis’ Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana.

Just recently she hit the back of the net in the 2-3 loss to Serbia in an international friendly to prepare for the FIFA Women’s World Cup which will be played in Australia and New Zealand.

No doubt the news of her “injury” would have led to the South African Senior Women’s National Team to be on full alert and will be monitoring the situation – more so as Ellis still has to announce her final squad of 23 players for the global women’s football showpiece.

Seoposenwe has been ever-present for Banyana Banyana since she came to prominence after scoring the goal that qualified South Africa for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.

Her star continued to shine when she was part of the squad that finished second at the 2018 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations – and also booked their ticket to their maiden FIFA Women’s World Cup in France in 2019.

More recently, she was influential in again rewriting the history books by helping Banyana Banyana lift their first ever continental title in July last year.

Percutaneous Electrolysis Therapy (EPTE)

Percutaneous electrolysis therapy (EPTE) is a revolutionary technique used to treat tendinopathies. It uses galvanic micro-currents so that the application is practically painless for the patient. This technique is quite effective: application is quick and patient recovery times are greatly reduced.

Therapeutic percutaneous electrolysis is an invasive technique that consists of the application of galvanic micro-currents via an acupuncture needle and guided using ultrasound for maximum precision and facilitated access to the injured area of the tendon. The objective is to induce a physical reaction in the tendon, provoking the controlled inflammation necessary to stimulate and activate the body’s self-recovery mechanisms, which by themselves have not been able to regenerate tendon fibres.

In short, it is a technique in which a micro-current is applied via a needle in order to activate the regeneration processes in the injured tissue.

Indicated for all types of patients, EPTE is ideal for elite athletes, but also for other patients who come in with tendon problems.
