BANYANA BANYANA: Hilda Magaia opens her account in Mexico with a brace

South Africa’s Hilda Magaia has opened her goal scoring account in the Liga MX Femenil in Mexico as she helped her team Mazatlán FC Femenil come from behind and win 3-1 against San Luis on Friday morning (2 February 2024).

This was their second win in six games since the start of the season, leaving them 13th on the table with six points after four losses.

Magaia had a good showing with an assist for the first goal to level the scores in the first half – before increasing her tempo after the recess which saw her grab a brace on Match Day 6.

Two goals in the second half without any reply from the opposition was enough for Mazatlán FC to claim all three points.

For her first goal in Mexico, the South African netted from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute to give her side a 2-1 lead. She then ensured victory with a solo run after outpacing the defence five minutes before the final whistle for a comfortable 3-1 win.

Magaia, who was playing her fifth match in succession since her arrival in Mexico – was not considered for the opening fixture of the season as she, along with compatriot, Sinoxolo Cesane, had just started training with the team from Sinaloa – a coastal city Northwest of Mexico.

Cesane, however, was missing from the match day six squad list for the second match in a row – she has scored three goals.

Four players from the Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana are plying their trade in Mexico and have been in great form.

Thembi Kgatlana was in action for Tigres UANL on Thursday (1 February 2024) and had an assist as they won 2-1 against Cruz Azul Femenil. She has also scored three in the league, helping her side to six wins in as many games, leaving them top of the table.

Jermaine Seoposenwe’s FC Monterrey takes on fifth-placed Club America on Saturday morning (3 February 2024). The Rayadas forward has also netted three goals, but missed the previous match against Cruz Azul Femenil which her team won 5-0.

The second-placed Rayadas del Monterrey have never lost against Club America in the Liga BBVA MX Femenil – with 10 victories and two draws in 12 outings.

Seoposenwe’s team has scored 29 and conceded only 12 against the team from the capital.
