Akhona Makalima to officiate at this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup

South Africa’s Akhona Makalima has been appointed to do duty at the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023.

The Nqamakwe, Eastern Cape-born lady joins 33 referees, 55 assistant referees as well as 19 Video Match Officials (VMO) who have been named on the final list by the FIFA Referees Committee.

“They have been chosen in close cooperation with the six confederations, based on the officials’ quality and the performances delivered at FIFA tournaments as well as at other international and domestic competitions in recent years. For the first time in the history of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, six female VMOs have also been selected,” said a FIFA statement.

Joining Makalima from the African continents are match officials from Togo, Morocco, Rwanda, Cameroon, Zambia, Kenya, Mali and Mauritius.

Rwanda’s Salima Mukasanga was part of six women match officials who made history by being appointed at the recently-ended FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

History was further rewritten when Stéphanie Frappart, Karen Diaz and Neuza Back were the first female match officials to take charge of a game at the FIFA World Cup in the group-stage clash between Costa Rica and Germany, while Kathryn Nesbitt was the assistant referee for the round-of-16 game between England and Senegal.

The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20.

Banyana Banyana, Zambia, Nigeria and Morocco will be the four African representatives at the tournament.

Desiree Ellis’ charges has been drawn in Group G against Sweden, Argentina and Italy.
