AFRICAN WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Sheryl Botes hits the ground running in Uganda

Less than 10 days after being appointed to her new position as the Head Coach of the Uganda Senior Women’s National Team, the Crested Cranes, Sheryl Botes has wasted no time in getting down to business.

The South African has named a provisional squad of 31 players to face Morocco in two international friendly matches, with the first game scheduled for Friday, 1 December 2023 at Le Mardi Stadium in Casablanca and the second on Tuesday, 5 December 2023 at Stade Moulay El Hassan in Rabat.

This will be the first time Botes takes charge of the Crested Cranes and has called up four goalkeepers as well as nine defenders, nine midfielders and nine forwards.

The team goes into camp on Thursday (23 November).

Botes was appointed on Wednesday, 15 November 2023 on a three-year contract and becomes the first foreign female Head Coach of the Crested Cranes.

She recently met with Ayub Khalifa Kiyingi, the U-20 Women’s National Team (Queen Cranes) head coach, who was appointed to the job in April this year – returning for a second spell.
